It was the intersection of the roads at the Kent/Surrey border. The New Cross Heath was registered in the 15th century when the neighborhood was still heavily forested.
Two city guilds had a crucial impact on the New Cross. The Worshipful Company of Haberdashers bought a large part of the land, in 1614, as a gift for charity. In the 18th century, the company leased out big houses to its members and other gentlemen and since the middle of the 19th century, after the railway came, it has been developing the land more intensively.
The Royal Naval School was established in 1843, and in 1891 the premises were taken over by Goldsmiths' Company's Technical and Recreative Institute. The Institute became a college of arts, now called the Goldsmiths University of London.
